Yaya DaCosta is making the naysayers eat their doubts on her.
Entertainment Tonight made a set visit to the Lifetime biopic and debuts the model-turned-actress as Whitney Houston in a video clip.
Showing off her Nippy mannerisms, the actress introduces Bobby Brown (Arlen Escarpeta) to the stage with the same intensity the late singer was accredited for.
While there, ET asked the actress how she’s been dealing with the online critics. “I kind of shut off all social media because I didn’t want to be distracted by the expectations, the naysayers.”
The film’s director, Angela Bassett also chimed in about criticism thrown her way as well.
“With great opportunity there will be criticism so you learn to accept that. But what you don’t need is to be going out looking for nay sayers, you have a job to do.”
And much criticism both have faced came from Houston’s family directly. Her daughter tweeted her outrage about the ANTM runner-up being chosen over her by calling Bassett a “bitch,” while Cissy Houston took a different approach. Releasing a statement, Cissy said:
“Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family’s objections. No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby,” she said in a statement to ET. “In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest.”
The film is still on schedule for its release where Yaya will be lip singing to Deborah Cox. Due to rights on her voice, Cox has rerecorded a few of Whitney’s greatest singles.
