Nick Cannon may have done the most publicly to land the lead spot in the Richard Pryor biopic, but he still missed the mark.
Fellow comedian Mike Epps lands the role in the Lee Daniels production.
If you remember Cannon grew his hair out, switched his mannerisms, and even took up smoking cigarettes to convince casting he was the perfect guy to tell Pryor’s story. He even told TMZ he was working with Daniels to get the ball rolling on production.
“I’ve definitely sat with Lee, who’s a close friend—again its one of those things that if the movie isn’t in production yet, I don’t want to be one of those dudes like ‘yeah its happening.’ When it comes to something as sensitive as a legend like Richard Pryor—there’s so many things that go into weighing in on who should be this person, so I don’t want to be out there like ‘yeah I’m doing it’ and then you look up and its not the case.”
Too bad in the end it still went to Epps. Oprah—who must be working with The Butler director again on this—confirmed via her Instagram. She posted a picture of herself, Lee, and Epps with the caption, “@theoriginalbigdaddy, @eppsie, and me just finished a great 1st read session. #RichardPryorMovie.”
Cannon wasn’t the only comedian gunning for the role. Pryors’ kids wanted Marlon Wayans to portray their father. Either way, congratulations Mike Epps, we can’t wait to see how you bring his spirit to life!
