Lupita Nyong’o style skills go past the closet and into the salon.
With Lupita’s six equally successful friends in tow—Jennifer Odera (childhood friend), Tashal Brown (Hampshire College roommate), Miriam Hyman (Yale classmate), Hallie Cooper-Novack, Stacey Sargeant (actress), and Nontsikelelo Mutiti (professor and artist)—the Kenyan-born star wows Vogue with an intimate setting short docu-style video of her braiding skills.
In peels of laughter her friends introduce her hiddent talent. “Lu’s ‘Do’s,’” they speak of her hair stylist alter ego due to her professional-level plaiting. Between Bantu knots, box braids, and cornrows, her friends become her clients as Lupita transforms into their hair confidant.
Thanks to being “morbid disappointed” from a coif experience, the mag’s newest cover girl vowed to learn how to do hair and thanks to her salon owning aunt, she was able to. In the Austin Peters-directed visual, Lancome’s new face revealed in college her side hustle was being an in-dorm stylist.
“I decided it was going to be my side hustle. I was going to make some money braiding people’s hair,” Nyong’o told Vogue. “So I went to the great troubles of creating a poster—but I just didn’t have the heart to charge anyone.” Not that she’s regretting that choice now.
“For me braiding hair is an intimate thing,” Nyong’o said. “It’s getting up close and personal and I like to do it for people I know and love and trust.” She also credits her hobby to helping her last grueling school hours and forging lasting relationships with the “genuine,” “honest,” “creative” friends who continue to “challenge me and require me to grow as a human being.”
We doubt she has time to enjoy her intimate past time now. Ever since she made her big screen debut in 12 Years a Slave, she’s been Hollywood’s hot commodity. From fashion campaigns to movie roles, the 31-year-old Yale graduate has her hands full. However its still nice to see she has many tricks up her talented sleeve.
