Her name was originally Maria Halle Berry until she was five when her parents, Jerome and Judith Berry, changed it to Halle Maria Berry.
Her name comes from the Halle Building in Cleveland, Ohio — which means name inspiration is everywhere!
Her parents divorced when Halle was still very young. Once they divorced, she was raised by her mother in the predominantly white suburb of Bedford in Cleveland, Ohio.
Her father was abusive to her mother and he died in 2003 from Parkinson’s Disease. She’s admitted to never forgiving him for his abusive ways.
She has an older sister, Heidi Berry-Henderson.
She went to an (nearly) all-white public school and dealt with lots of racism.
In high school she was class president, newspaper editor, prom queen, cheerleader, and Honor Society member.
She went to community college to study Broadcast Journalism but dropped out to pursue modeling.

Halle Berry has Type 1 Diabetes. She was diagnosed in 1989.
She was the victim of an abusive relationship. In 1991, one of her exes beat her and she lost 80% of her hearing. While she’s never said who it was, it’s alleged that it was either ex Wesley Snipes or Christopher Williams.
She attempted suicide in 2007 after her second failed marriage.
