‘DeGrassi’ alum, Dalmar Abuzeid becomes first black character in ‘Anne of Green Gables’ reboot, ‘Anne With an E’.
Abuzeid will play Sebastian Lacroix, an Afro-Caribbean steamship worker. Lacroix is introduced as Gilbert Blythe’s friend. Originally from Trinidad, Lacroix arrives in fictional Avonlea as a manual laborer. He stokes coal in the engine room of a steamship.
The addition of an Afro-Caribbean character is monumental as this is the first time the series added a black character. The rebooted Anne With an E is based on the 1908 novel series by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is one of 13 adaptations, including movies, TV shows, stage plays and theme parks.
Abuzeid is best-known for playing Danny Van Zandt for six seasons on Degrassi: The Next Generation. This is the second season of the series and the second season will premiere Friday.
