Less than 24 hours after Alton Sterling was killed by the Baton Rouge, Louisiana police for selling CDs, a St. Anthony, Minnesota cop killed Philando Castile.
The aftermath of his shooting was caught on tape by his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, who posted the ordeal on Facebook Live. According to her emotional recording on Wednesday (Jul 6), an officer, only identified as Asian, pulled her and her boyfriend over in Falcon Heights for a broken tail light.
When he was instructed to give the officer his license, Castilo “told [the officer] that it was in his wallet, but he had a pistol on him because he’s licensed to carry.”
Apparently while Castilo was doing as instructed the officer said, “don’t move.” “As he was putting his hands back up, the officer shot him in the arm four or five times.”
You can hear the officer off camera saying, “I told him not to move,” with Reynolds replying that he was following the officer’s orders.
Reynolds’ emotions heightened when she realizes the cop killed Philando Castilo not only in front of her but also her child who is in the back seat.
“Please don’t tell me my boyfriend’s gone,” she said.”He don’t deserve this, please. He works for St. Paul Public Schools. He’s never been in jail, anything. He’s not a gang member, anything.”
The police then instruct Reynolds to exit the vehicle. One officer takes her daughter as two other officers draw their weapon on the woman as she exits the vehicle. Reynolds is arrested and placed in the back of the police car with her daughter.
The only comfort Reynolds receives is from her daughter who tells her upset mother, “It’s OK, mama. It’s OK, I’m right here with you.”
The video was originally removed from Facebook with her account deleted but later reactivated with the video.
While Reynolds was in police custody, Castile was pronounced dead Hennepin County Medical Center.
