We reported earlier this year a movie based on Johnnie Cochran’s 1981 landmark Signal Hill police brutality case is underway. Anthony Mackie has officially been cast to star as attorney Johnnie Cochran in the untitled movie.
Before Cochran would be tagged as the attorney for the stars such as OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson, he was getting justice for blacks who were victims of police brutality. His most significant case was the Signal Hill case in which he represented Cal State Long Beach football star Ron Settles. Settles was pulled over and arrested for speeding in Signal Hill, in Los Angeles County. While in the police’s custody Settles was found hanging in his cell. It was initially labeled a suicide, but after Cochran persuaded Settles’ family to exhume the body an autopsy showed he had been choked to death.
(Sandra Bland anyone?)
Cochran won the family $760,000 in a civil suit, the police chief resigned, and reforms were mandated.
Written by David McMillan, Mackie will also produce the film.
